My favorite part of being an attorney is being able to tell a story of my client. Years ago I was the victim of a crime and the abuser had charges filed against him. As I scanned the courtroom from the hard benches I sitting on where the “spectators” sat I remember looking at the two tables at the front of the courtroom where the prosecutor and the defense attorney sat. As I looked at the lawyers at those tables, I had no idea who any of those individuals were. I had never spoken to them, been interviewed by them or had met any of them. They could not tell my story or any other of the victims. Even when the charges were ultimately dropped against the abuser, I found out when it was announced in the courtroom. No one in that proceeding was advocating for me or telling my story to the Court. The process left me feeling very let down and disenchanted by the legal process.
When I became attorney, telling my client’s story became very important. I want the Court to hear and see my client as a person, not merely another file in their system the judge has to get through by the end of their calendar. Whether it is a jury, the judge or a mediator in the judicial process, it is important that they know the client’s story. As my client’s advocate, it is my responsibility to tell their story. I know first hand what it’s like to be in a court process what is like to be in a court process and not being heard. This is especially true in cases that involve an elderly individual where I’m not only telling my client’s story but you’re also advocating for their loved one’s wishes to be followed and they have since passed on.
The individuals who are at my office are carefully selected. They need to have the capacity to be a counselor to my clients as well as their advocate. We move cases through the firm as a team. While I lead the overall strategy, my team of selected attorneys, paralegals, law clerks and assistants handle the day to day work. We meet once a week to discuss each client and and their case. This ensures everyone is on the same page and everyone is updated. It also ensures whatever the client tells one team member will be known by the entire team.
When not working on cases or leading the firm, I love curl up in a corner with a mug of hot cocoa while reading a book. I love escaping to tropical beaches and relaxing with the surf lapping my feet. I love to travel and see the architecture and experience the history of the world. I grew up in upstate New York and learned to love the history and stories of the events that formed our country. It developed a deep love of historical events and historical places that still endures today.
I serve on two Boards: the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors Affiliate Committee and San Jose History. San Jose History strives to preserve the stories of the people and places that were important to preserve of San Jose. It has a wonderfully diverse history in the history of California as well as how it was settled.
I went to school later in life. When I went to law school, I was married and had three kids: my youngest son in elementary school, my middle daughter in junior high and my oldest starting high school. I graduated from law school in 2005 and began practicing in 2006. I was even older when I started my own law firm. I believe it is never too late to realize your dreams. I founded Steburg Law Firm in 2010 and we have been working hard for our clients ever since. It went from me and my husband who became my assistant to the staff we have today. It all started with a dream.
We focus on helping our clients create a legacy and preserve intergenerational wealth through estate planning, conservatorships, trust and will administration and litigation, bringing abusers of elder abuse to justice as well as tax planning and litigation.
I am licensed to practice in California, every federal Court in California as well as United States Tax Court. I am a member of Silicon Valley Bar Association.
My favorite place to eat in San Jose is at the outdoor restaurants in Santa Row. I love people watching and creating backstories for people in my mind as they pass. I love a good hockey game (Go Sharks)!
